Bad accident in Flushing

Sep. 18th, 2017 11:06 pm

[personal profile] silver_chipmunk
A tour bus hit an MTA bus and careened into Kennedy Chicken, killing three (the driver of the tour bus, a passenger on the MTA bus, and a pedestrian), injuring at least 19, and starting a fire in Kennedy Chicken. I was home asleep at 6 am when this happened around the corner from me. But I was affected by the traffic snarl it caused, because my bus was rerouted and I had to walk up to the Whitestone Expressway to get my bus.

Aside from that the day was OK. I did the gaming program with the teens and it was moderately successful.

After work the FWiB called and we talked while I went to meet up with [personal profile] mashfanficchick and her mother. We went to Applebee's for $6.99 burgers for dinner. Delicious.

Came home and fed the cats and turtle. Bjorn ate this morning, but tonight he ate almost nothing. I may have to take him back to the vet.

Gratitude List:

1. The FWiB.

2. Friends.

3. Wasn't involved in the accident.

4. Delicious burger.

5. Air conditioning.

6. Bjorn as long as I have him.

Still having to put breaks in by hand, still no word from Dreamwidth.

Slept late

Though not as late as I could have I guess, so that's OK. My milk had turned so I ate used up the last of the powdered instant flavored coffee I had leftover from the cottage, then went out later for brunch from Dunkin" Donuts.

Spent most of the day puttering on-line, or reading. I've started rereading Godstalk, the first of the Godstalker books by P C Hodgell. I've read the first one many times, the second one I think once, and I didn't know until recently that there were more. After I finish the second one I shall have to see about getting more on my Nook.

The FWiB called and we had a nice long talk. Texted back and forth with [Bad username or unknown identity: Mashfanficchick"], we may go out tomorrow.

Bjorn didn't eat any of his leftovers this morning, but he ate so much last night that I'll only be worried if he doesn't eat tonight. He's in the bathroom now eating, I hope.

Called The Kid, no answer. Left a message, hope she calls back.

Gratitude List:

1. The FWiB.

2. Days to read.

3. Good books.

4. Friends.

5. Cats.

6. Have more reding time tonight.

Edited to add: Still having to put the breaks in by hand.

Working Saturday

It went OK, nothing much to say about it. Got a text from [personal profile] mashfanficchick from Renn Faire, where she had found a print of St Michael that she thought I might like, and wanted to know if she should buy it for me. I said yes, I haven't heard back from her so I hope she got it. Edited to add, just heard from her, she did. Yay!

After work I just came home. The FWiB called and we had a nice long talk.

And that's about all.

Put in a support request to Dreamwidth about the issue I'm having with the page and paragraph breaks, no reply yet.

Oh, and Bjorn ate more this morning, again, so I'm hopeful...

Gratitude List:

1. Cats.

2. The FWiB.

3. Friends.

4. Quiet day.

5. Despite looking grey and rainy this mornning, so I took my umbrella, it cleared up nicely.

6. Ice cream with dinner.

Slow day at work

[personal profile] silver_chipmunk
I started out the day by, as I said last night, giving Bjorn the leftovers from his dinner the night before. He ate some of it, not all of it, but enough that I am encouraged and am going to keep trying.

Work was slow, since I was originally supposed to be free today I ended up only being on the schedule for the desk one hour. So I was kind of bored.

After work I went to Boston Market for dinner as usual for Friday. Then the FWiB called and we talked until my meeting. The meeting was quite good, a new person came.

Came home and am now feeding the cats again.

Gratitude List:

1. Bjorn ate some breakfast.

2. The FWib.

3. My meetings and the people there.

4. Air conditioning (it was very humid today)

5. Oldest Brother was able to get his muffler fixed.

6. Quiet day at work.

Had to put the breaks in by hand again.

Not much in the way of news

Except that Aunt Helen finally heard from the contractor about doing the cottage porch and the back stairs. He won't be able to do it until October because he's taking a vacation. But as long as it gets done before next summer, it's all good.

Aside from that, work was about as usual. Stopped at the bank and the drug store on the way home from work, nothing too interesting. Had some of the Ben and Jerry's ice cream I got awhile ago, the cinnamon bun flavor. It was quite good. And had a can of the Vernor's that I brought back from upstate with dinner. Always good.

The FWiB called and we talked, all is well.

I have reached a decision about Bjorn and his eating issues. Assuming he doesn't finish his dinner tonight, which is the most likely case, instead of leaving the remains for Sybil I'm going to refrigerate it and try him again with it in the morning when I take my shower.

Called the Kid, just got her voice mail.

And that's all.

Gratitude List:

1. The FWiB.

2. Ice cream.

3. Heard from the contractor.

4. Vernor's.

5. Despite the humidity it didn't rain.

6. Quiet day at work.

Have to put the breaks in by hand again. Maybe I should get in touch with Dreamwidth and discuss this.

Once again the plumbers did not come

What the hell is with this? This makes twice now. I got up at 8, and sat here all day long, and they never showed up.

I finally gave up and went out with [personal profile] mashfanficchick and her mother, first to dinner at Qdoba, then to several Judaica bookstores in search of Rosh Hashanah books for Theo. Then we ended up at Carvel of course, it being Wednesday.

I had a psychiatrist appointment but I cancelled it. I'll reschedule for next week or the week after, I have enough of my meds to last.

The FWiB called but we didn't talk long because I was out.

I fed Bjorn with a can of the new food, the chicken that he ate before. I hope he eats it now. He's in the bathroom eating now.

Now lets see if the line breaks and paragraph breaks are back or if I have to put them in by hand.

Gratitude List:

1. I didn't waste vacation time on this nonsense.

2. The FWiB.

3. Friends.

4. Carvel.

5. Air conditioning.

6. Bed soon.

Nope, putting in the breaks now.

On Friday, as we left for work in the van, the check engine idiot light came on. We took it to Master Auto on the way in, swapping for our other working car. Except that I'm hoping for better luck, the thought has crossed my mind that perhaps we should store the spare car in their back parking lot. Anyway, they called after lunch to say that they think the warning light is being triggered by the lack of a vacuum in the fuel system and/or the sensor for that. It is a very sensitive sensor, so even if the air leak is tiny, it's enough to make the warning light up. It can also be caused by not tightening the fuel cap thoroughly. This particular problem is nothing to get excited about, the worst thing is that by having it lit up if something else triggers it, there is no way to know as it's already on. The best thing to do is get an OBD reader that allows reset of the warning, then we'll know if there's a new problem. We retrieved the van after work and then took it to Ionia on Saturday. Happily, no new problems have appeared.

We have decided not to fix the possessed heating/cooling system in the beige Park Avenue as that's a several hundred dollar repair. Both blowers have gone bad but winter is coming an a vehicle that no longer knows how to cool the air will not be an issue for a while. With some degree of luck we'll be able to dispose of that car before next summer.

Saturday morning we got up early as I had made an appointment with Big D Lock & Key to purchase and program electronic keys for the van. I purchased one through them, two more on Amazon, and they programmed all three for the cost of programming the one I purchased there. Big D is a strange place, it's a locksmith and has all the normal stuff you'd expect (lock sets, keys, safes) but also has a shelf display that made me wonder if an elderly relative asked if he or she could move the items at didn't sell at their yard sale inside. It worked to my benefit though, I now own a real Coach purse ($15.00!) and a 4-episode DVD of Dragnet ($1.00).

With our purchases in hand, we walked out the to car and headed toward Ionia. I wanted to stop at Portland or any other of the little communities on the way to run an Ingress mission or two, but [livejournal.com profile] jebra reminded me that there were another six missions in the Ann Arbor Mission Day set that we wanted to do and the only way to keep all the Mission Day badges together was to do them next. I was sad but he was right, so we agreed that we'd wait until this coming Sunday and go to Ann Arbor to finish them up. So we arrived in Ionia around 2 pm and called my mom to see if she wanted to have a late lunch with us. She did; we went and picked her up and went to El Mariachi Mexican Grill. The food was as good as I remembered and we were all stuffed to the gills when we left to go shopping for things to take to the Davis & Jones Family Reunion. We also stopped at the Dollar Tree as my mom wanted to buy a few birthday cards. While there I found a bin of DVDs and picked out a copy of the Julie Andrews movie Star! I had never heard of it but I read the back of the box and thought it sounded interesting. We watched it later that night and holy cats, the costume changes. And the dance routines, my goodness she was strong and flexible to be able to do the moves in the last dance number. [livejournal.com profile] jebra told me the movie did not do well in the theaters, and I can see how it would be hard to market but I found it appealing for a variety of reason, it's look back on a time in history, in the evolution of music and musical theater, wonderful costuming, and a fairly engrossing story line.

Sunday morning [livejournal.com profile] jebra got up before I did and started cooking. Our contribution to the Family Reunion was meatballs in a BBQ sauce, plus he made our traditional breakfast of steel-cut oats with raisins. My mom brought salad and fried chicken that we'd ordered from Meijers the day before. We stopped to get it on the way to Onondaga and still managed to arrive on time.

The reunion was better attended than the previous two, perhaps because there was a rumor that this would be the last one. That's not exactly true; during the reunion we took a vote and decided that this would be the last potluck in the township hall. In the future we'll meet a restaurant at a location somewhat central to the attendees, probably in Mt Pleasant.

Anyway I had a good time catching up with everyone I spoke with (three hours is not long enough for an in-depth conversation with everyone) and we helped clean up the hall when our rental was over. Which was easy as there were no tiny children (mess-makers) and all we had to do was take home our leftovers, remove the table cloths, and stack the chairs. My mom caught a ride home with my cousin Barbie, so when we got back to the van it wasn't much past 3 pm and [livejournal.com profile] jebra realized we had quite a few hours before dark and we could go to Ann Arbor to finish those Ingress missions. We did, and met up with [livejournal.com profile] traveller42 and [livejournal.com profile] mbumby at the 6th mission to walk around the park before the four of us went to Plymouth for dinner.

Monday was back to work followed by the first band practice of the new season for [livejournal.com profile] jebra. I stayed home and biked and did laundry. Tuesday was work followed by dinner at Arby's and then the first guild meeting of the year for me. It was lovely seeing everyone and we had so many knitters attend I was starting to wonder if we'd all fit. Our fearless leader reassured everyone that next month it wouldn't be as crowded as the chairs and tables had been shoved closely together to make room for the silent auction and the video presentation taking place last night. I thought I'd bid on two auctions and knew I'd been outbid on both when I went to check before bidding ended. I wasn't disappointed because I already knew I was going home with a lot of yarn from the free table. But when the winners were announced I was reminded that I'd placed three bids and I'd won the third (for three books, all in the one skein wonders series, and all three for a whopping $5.00).

Pretty OK day

I did the laptop program with the teens, and it was pretty successful.

[personal profile] mashfanficchick and her mother kindly picked up Bjorn's food for me today, so tomorrow I can get it and feed him the chicken that he seems to like better than the tuna.

Had a couple of problematic patrons, but nothing I couldn't handle.

The FWiB called and we talked, not for long though s he was very tired from having been out all day today.

And I had my meeting, which was very good, we had someone visit from another group which was nice.

Gratitude List:

1. My meetings and the people there.

2. The FWiB.

3. [personal profile] mashfanficchick and her mother.

4. Free day tomorrow to wait for the gas valve inspection.

5. Beautiful weather today.

6. Cookies.

Putting the line and paragraph breaks in by hand is getting really old.

The Wicked Day sixteen years on

So here it is 9/11 again. And not much to say about it. Every year it slides farther into the past. But I feel the need to remark and remember.

It was a beautiful blue day today, as it was that year. And as always I went to work. I didn't think about it during the day, that much has changed over the years. And I didn't do a display this year.

It was a pretty good day, I had the first of my after school programs, the gaming program, today. Worked out well.

And I did the walk-around computer tutor for an hour, which is really kind of pointless.

After work I talked to the FWiB, and really that's about all.

Last night Bjorn didn't eat as well as he has been. I don't think he likes the tuna flavor as well as the chicken. Hopefully he eats better tonight, though all I have left is the tuna, and only two cans (well one now) of that. I asked [personal profile] mashfanficchick and her mother to pick up a case of the chicken for him tomorrow.

Last night when I posted the line and paragraph breaks didn't work for some reason and I had to put them in by hand. I am going to try tonight again. We shall see.

Gratitude List:

1. The FWiB.

2. The first responders of 9/11.

3. My turtle.

4. My cats.

5. Friends.

6. Knowing enough html to put the line breaks in.

OK, I did preview post and there were no line breaks or paragraph break, putting them in by hand.

Constructive day

Got up and went over to the mall in Flushing where I met [personal profile] mashfanficchick. We went to Target, where I got shoes, and Old Navy, where I got a pair of pants. Then we ate lunch in Applebee's. And while I was in Applebee's, Spectrum called.
The woman said she was at a store and a customer came in t expand her services, but when they asked her address, they had me at that address. So I said "Apartment D3?" and she said "No, apartment D12." She said they had me down as apartment D12, though my bills come to apartment D3, so go figure. Anyway, she said she would straighten it out, so I said thank you and hung up.
A few minutes later she called back and asked if I was home. I said no. She said the service would be off for about 7 minutes while they sifted it, but then it would be fine. I said ok and that was that.
Until I checked my e-mail some time later, when we were in BJ's. There was a message from Spectrum saying I had a technician visit scheduled for Tuesday the 12th!
So I tried calling back to the number the woman had called me from, and it wasn't working. So [personal profile] mashfanficchick gave me their 800 number that she had, and I called that, and fought with the automated system until she suggested I try saying "agent", which finally got me through to a human being, or at least someone who could pass a Turing test. And I told her the story, and she checked my account and said no, no visits were scheduled and I should ignore the notice, and that my service was on and should be working OK. So I was relieved.
Until I checked my e-mail again and found three! more notices from Spectrum about technician visits, some with the address of apartment D3, so with the address apartment D12. So in frustration I said that if, when I got home tonight my service was working, I was going to take the woman at her word and ignore the whole thing. Spoiler, the service is working.
So anyway, throughly frustrated, we left the mall, got bubble tea, and went back to [personal profile] mashfanficchick's apartment where we met up with her mother, and did some cleaning work around the apartment, and watched coverage of Hurricane Irma.
The FWiB called and we spoke for a short time. And finally we had sushi for dinner, cause nothing says the hurricane wasn't as bad as expected like raw fish on rice.
And that's all.
Gratitude List:
1. My Spectrum service is working.
2. Friends.
3. The FWiB.
4. Sushi.
5. Everyone I know in Florida seems to be OK.
6. New shoes to replace my old ones which were developing holes.
edited to add: WTF? Where are my line and paragraph breaks????
edited again to add: Trying to put the breaks in by hand via html. We'll see if it works.

Quiet day at work

But busier than Saturdays have been for awhile, I guess it's because of school being in session.

Anyway, not much to say about it. My boss did tell me congratulations, the circulation in my section is up 20%, which is excellent. Mind you, I'm not quite sure what it is I'm doing to cause it, but i'll try to keep it up.

The FWiB called as usual, but we didn't talk as long as usual because he was very tired, but we had a nice conversation.

Bjorn ate well last night, and when I gave him his food tonight was last seen wolfing it down. Big relief!

Tomorrow I am going shoe shopping, a job I am not thrilled with but needs to be done, because my shoes I wear to work are getting holes. [personal profile] mashfanficchick is going to meet me.

Gratitude List:

1. The FWiB.

2. I'm not the one who had to deal with the member of the public who is leaving a mess in the public restroom on a regular basis.

3. Bjorn eating.

4. Friends.

5. Lovely fall weather.

6. Circulation up.

Bjorn's bloodtests were normal

[personal profile] silver_chipmunk
Work was OK. I got an email in the morning from cousin Steve inviting us all to Columbus Day weekend at his place in Vermont. I would love to go if I can get that Saturday off, because as it stands now I am, of course, working. We shall see.

Called the contractor, didn't get him, got his answering machine and left a message that he should get in touch with Aunt Helen. Hope he does!

The vet called, I missed the call of course, the one time I didn't have my phone to hand, while I was in the bathroom. But I called back and got the results of Bjorn's tests, which were, as I said in the subject, normal. He ate almost the whole can of food last night, and tonight he really launced into it when I put it down' so I feel much relieved.

The Kid texted about Steve's email, she will probably not go, alas.

After work the FWiB called while I was eating at Boston Market, and we talked until it was time for my meeting.

The meeting was good, bigger than it's been in the last few weeks so that was nice.

And then I came home to find ANOTHER note on my door from the plumbers doing an inspection of the gas valves. Not for some time yet though.

And that's all the news.

Gratitude List:

1. Bjorn is eating and his bloods are normal.

2. My meetings and the people there.

3. The FWiB.

4. Family.

5. The weather was lovely today.

6. Got to work on time.

So Bjorn went to the vet today

Thanks to the lift from [personal profile] mashfanficchick and her mother. And they gave him a can of wet food and he jumped at it and began scarfing it down! From which we conclude that he is really sick of dry food. So they gave me some little cans of his prescription food as wet food, and as of right now he was eating one when I shut him in the bathroom to feed Sybil. (He gets fed there, she gets fed in the kitchen, to keep them from eating each other's foods.)They also took blood for tests, which I'll hear about tomorrow.

After that I went in to work and worked. Not much to say about it.

After work The Kid texted me to say I should answer Betsy's e-mail from yesterday. I had been planning on calling Aunt Helen anyway, so I did that after I talked to the FWiB, and ascertained that despite what betsy said, she knew quite well that No one was coming up in the fall, and that the sealant had been put in the flashing, which were the things she was saying Aunt Helen didn't know and wanted to know. So I have no idea who's telling who what, but I answered Betsy saying I'd spoken to Aunt Helen about stuff. Also found out, which was what I was originally calling about, that the contractor has not called Aunt Helen. So I'm going to have to call him tomorrow.

So as I say, after I texted with The Kid, I talked to the FWiB, and we had a nice conversation, though he is a bit hung up on the hurricane situation. Understandable I suppose.

Sybil is mooching outside the bathroom door. She knows Bjorn is getting soft food, and she wants it too! *sigh*

Gratitude List:

1. Bjorn ate at the vet's and seems to be eating here.

2, [personal profile] mashfanficchick and her mom.

3. The FWiB.

4. Aunt Helen.

5. The turtle eats what she's given!

6. Lovely weather.

The inspection and other stuff

Sep. 6th, 2017 10:50 pm

[personal profile] silver_chipmunk
So I got up a little after 8:00 and waited for the inspector. When he came it was around 11:30, and it was just him. The whole thing lasted about 3 minutes, seriously. He asked if I had any under 6 year old children in the house, looked to see that there was no chipped, peeling paint, and checked that I had a smoke/CO2 detector. And that was it.

So I called the vet to see if they could fit Bjorn in today, but they don't have vets working on Wednesday. So I called work, asked if I could come in late tomorrow, was told yes, and called back to the vet and made an appointment for tomorrow. [personal profile] mashfanficchick and her mother are going to drive me. He just hasn't been eating normally, and I'm not sure he ate anything today at all.

At 3:00 I left the house and went to meet [personal profile] mashfanficchick and hung out while she finished working. Then her mother picked us up and we went to Chipotle and ate dinner, then to Stop and Shop for shopping. I got cat food for Sybil, and some other stuff. Then we went to Carvel, and had ice cream.

The FWiB did call, when we were at Chipotle, but didn't talk long as he was pretty wrung out from the chemo.

And I should have started this by saying The Kid did call last night. At midnight. We had a pretty long conversation, which was good.

And that was pretty much my day.

Gratitude List:

1. The FWiB.

2. The Kid called.

3. My boss.

4. [personal profile] mashfanficchick

5. Carvel.

6. Savings at Stop and Shop.
